Medical Support Programs

The Lesotho Connection, along with our partners, continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing health care access in the Mohale’s Hoek district. The region faces significant health challenges, including high rates of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and infant mortality, as well as other diseases exacerbated by poor nutrition and the recent coronavirus pandemic.

MEDICAL SUPPLIES - To address these pressing needs, TLC has successfully facilitated the shipment of 40-foot containers filled with essential medical equipment and supplies from MedWish in Ohio. Since the initiative's inception, three shipments have been made: the first in 2018, followed by a second in 2020, and a third in 2021. The distribution of these supplies has positively impacted seven clinics and hospitals in the area, contributing to improved health outcomes and supportive care for the local population. Each shipment has been met with appreciation, reflecting the urgent need for such resources in the district.

“The truth is that MedWish and TLC from Ohio came to our rescue at the time of crisis and panic, not just in Lesotho but globally, that’s the truth!”

HEALTHCARE BRIGADES - In 2018, 2023, and 2024, TLC supported a Medical Brigade of American doctors who saw hundreds of patients at five clinics. This initiative demonstrated the organization’s commitment to improving healthcare access in the community. The teams comprised skilled professionals from the US and Lesotho who provided essential medical services, addressing various health concerns.

The brigade's return is highly anticipated as they plan to continue their outreach efforts. A particular focus is the need for eye care. Eye specialists will be present to fit glasses and provide the capacity to perform cataract surgeries. This enhancement in services aims to alleviate visual impairments that many in the community face. By prioritizing these healthcare needs, TLC continues to play a crucial role in supporting health initiatives and enhancing the quality of life for the people it serves. The anticipated services will not only provide immediate assistance but also long-term support to local clinics in the district. This commitment to health needs reflects TLC’s broader initiative to address the diverse needs of the population of Mohale’s Hoek area.

In September 2024, a dedicated team of eye surgeons conducted a critical mission at Nt’sekhe Hospital in Mohale’s Hoek. Dr. Bob Wenz successfully performed 38 cataract surgeries within five days, while, Dr. Omar Kadiebwe completed 10 surgeries. Surgeries were limited due to operating room availability. A routine follow-up a week later revealed important findings; two patients were referred to Dr. Kadiebwe for potential glaucoma, highlighting the need for ongoing eye care, while one patient exhibited low eye pressure that may necessitate further intervention.

The Eye Clinic Team, based at St. Patrick’s Hall in Mohale’s Hoek, delivered essential eye care services to approximately 356 patients. Under the guidance of Dr. Ron Jurcak and Dr. Bokang Pitso, the team successfully dispensed over 300 pairs of glasses. Additionally, many patients received treatment using artificial tears and a range of eye medications such as allergy drops, steroid drops, antibiotic drops, and glaucoma drops. This outreach initiative not only focused on correcting vision but also aimed to improve the overall eye health of community members.
