Linda served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Matsieng, Lesotho from 1980 to 1982. She married fellow volunteer Chip Henry and they returned to Lesotho to visit in 2007 and vowed to come back and to work on a project. After Chip’s death in 2011, Linda decided to carry on with the plan to return to “give back” to Lesotho.  She spent 6 months living and working at the St. Camillus Center in Mohale’s Hoek with Sister Juliana and the the kids living at the Center’s orphanage.  She will continue to fundraise and coordinate activities with plans to return as frequently as possible to Lesotho. Aylie Millar and Andrew Lench traveled to Mohale’s Hoek, Lesotho in the summer of 2010. They worked with Sr. Juliana Manele and the people of the St. Camillus Community for 3 weeks, and – while there – also worked with the children to create some lovely pieces of art. The children’s cut paper flowers were used to make note cards which are sold to raise money to send back to Sr. Juliana and the people of St. Camillus. Mike Henry, Board Member

Mike is a graduate of Chagrin Falls High School and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from John Carroll University.  Upon completing his studies, Mike served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Haiti from 2002 – 2004.  Mike put the language and experience from Peace Corps to work when he later joined the International Training and Education Center for HIV/AIDS where managed the Haiti Lab Supplies Program for two years.  Mike later joined Cross International, a Florida-based charity that supports community based organizations in developing countries with small grants assistance.  With Cross, Mike led the development and oversight of grant programs in Latin America, Caribbean, and Southern Africa.

Mike and his wife, Michaela, moved back to Cleveland in 2014 where they are now raising their three children.  Mike has since begun a career in real estate and is excited to continue making a difference for others through the Lesotho Connection.

Theresa served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana, where she conducted research and provided training in renewable energy technologies. She visited Lesotho four times and completed dissertation research on information communication technology in Lesotho as well as a second post-doctorate research project on leadership and poverty in the country. She was in instructor for seven years at Eastern Washington University, Department of Engineering Technology & Multimedia Design. Current affiliations in addition to the Tacoma Lesotho Connection: Tacoma Neighborhood Clinic, Tacoma Catholic Worker, Homeless Connect, and Hilltop Madrinas.

Sherry served as a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) in 1980-82 where she provided training in accounting to manage school funds. Sherry and her husband Joel (who also served as a PCV) returned to visit Lesotho in 1994 and again in 2010 while attending World Cup games in South Africa.  On this second trip, they shared their love of Lesotho with their 3 adult children.  They visited Sr. Sylvia and the Holy Cross nuns, where TLC sends money for scholarships.  They also visited Sr. Juliana and the St. Camillus Project.

Sherry’s prior career experiences include working as the Controller & CFO (11 years) for Morning Sun Clothing and as an accountant for non-profits and small businesses for 5 years.  Past volunteer activities include serving on the Advisory Board for YMCA Camp Seymour, and volunteering with the Phoenix Housing Network, Habitat for Humanity, and St. Leo Food Connection.

In addition to a love of teaching, Katie has a passion for mission work and has been blessed to volunteer her time in Burundi, Africa and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In the Summer of 2014, she will be travelling to Lesotho and Bolivia, as well. She is excited to be a part of the amazing team of individuals who work diligently to fulfill The Lesotho Connection’s mission.

Halley Egnew is now attending Western Washington University. She enjoys reading, listening to music, and (when time permits) catching up on sleep. She hopes to attend university and major in public health.

Joel’s connection with Lesotho comes from being a Peace corps volunteer with his lovely wife, Sherry Hellenkamp, from 1980-82. He loves Lesotho, but only recently joined the board after a knee injury kept him from spending his free time on the soccer field. He coached and played soccer while in Lesotho and every place that he has ever been!

As a Family Therapist, he specializes in child development, marriage and family challenges, chemical dependency, trauma, learning differences, and cross-cultural issues. As a school counselor, he gets to play with and mentor kids. He loves his job! He also has volunteered with the Pierce county AIDS Foundation.

Joel’s love for Africa and Lesotho has him hooked. He has returned twice since his Peace Corps days and hopes to return again.
